TO SADIQ ABACHA — ON BEHALF OF WOLE SOYINKA | BY AYO SOGUNRO

Dear Sadiq Abacha, I do not know you personally, but I admire your filial bravery—however misguided—in  defending the honour of your father , the late General Sani Abacha. This in itself is not a problem; it is an obligation—in this cultural construct of ours—for children to rise to the defence of their parents, no matter what infamy or perfidy the said parent might have dabbled in.  Read more here...  http://ayosogunro.com/2014/03/05/to-sadiq-abacha-on-behalf-of-soyinka-by-ayo-sogunro/

“My baby has turned me into a kind of celebrity” OAU student finally speaks out

Image
Oyinlola Rotimi, a 400-level student, has reportedly spoken for the first time since she delivered her baby boy in the student residence toilet of Moremi Hall at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Already OAU authorities have explained that it was not an attempted murder as earlier speculated and both mother and child were doing well. In an interview published on   CKN Nigeria CKN Nigeria reports:   In spite of the trauma she had passed through since last Wednesday, the student, a native of Ijabe, a border town between Osun and Kwara states, says she is happy that the embarrassment she received from the controversy that surrounded the birth of her baby has turned into a blessing for her. She says the baby’s birth has made her more popular and important in the society. Her plan for the baby “I will continue to keep him more handsome, healthier and nurture him to attain greater height in life. But what he will become later in life is ...

Ripples over Sourth West PDP’s endorsement of Jonathan

Image
CONTROVERSY is currently trailing the outcome of the South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] leaders’ meeting in Lagos, during which delegates reportedly endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term in office in 2015. Feelers indicated on Wednesday that a number of the leaders were kicking against what they described as the smuggling of the issue of the presidential race into the communiqué of the meeting by some desperate delegates. The meeting came on the heels of a similar endorsement by PDP leaders from the Middle Belt and the South-South at separate meetings. Some notable PDP members, including former governors of the party from the zone, were absent at the South-West PDP leaders’ Lagos meeting. Some of those present, who craved anonymity while speaking with Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday, blamed the current furore on the communiqué on “some overzealous elements and fifth columnists, who were bent on jumping the gun since the president said Nigeria...

My dear governor, are you videoing, mbok? by Henry Okelue

Let’s just say this event… never happened in reality. Let’s assume I made it up, in my usual hydrocarbon fuelled craze. There was a gathering of looters and semi-pious gangsters. So it happened that they had to vote for the next ring leader, and the incumbent head-man, who probably also has a Mexican name, was interested in leading again. READ:   Release the whole video – Mimiko challenges Amaechi On the other side, the side that had the backing of the Cap’n-in-chief, was a confused jaguda whose name rhymes with Jangirova. He-whose-name-rhymes-with-jangirova is known to be presently presiding over a non-ending gang war in the part of town he lords over. So the gang gathered to cast lots on who rules next. A gang member, well known for his Kangol hat (he had it on that day too), and who is a kinsman of a former gang member who is currently doing time in a foreign land, was called forward. He would watch over the cast lots. He accepted the noble role with aplomb. Very gr...

Tell the world Adebolaji is not a Nigerian now...

Nigerians all over the world should speak out and condemn the beheading of a citizen yesterday in UK. The beheading was done by a British citizen and not a Nigerian as speculated, his name does not confirm his nationality. British born Michael 'Mujahid' Adeboloja with an accomplice yesterday beheaded a British Soldier on a street in Woolwich, London. It is now being made to look like Nigeria has "shown itself again" in the action of this British boy who beheaded a soldier yesterday. This lunatic was born in the United Kingdom, never been to Nigeria, issued a birth certificate in the UK and held a British passport. He now commits a barbaric act and suddenly he is now a Nigerian? Is it because he is not Gabriel Agbonlahor playing for Aston Villa and Three Lions, or Andrew Osagie, UK's reigning 800m champion, or Lawrence Okoye, British Discus Record Holder (68.24m), or Abiodun oyepitan, British Olympic Silver and Gold Medalist, or Christine Ohuruogu, Beijing O...

Weird one: Meet The man with perfectly formed 12 fingers and 12 toes

Image
They call him “Twenty-Four.” Yoandri Hernandez Garrido’s nickname comes from the six perfectly formed fingers on each of his hands and the six impeccable toes on each foot. Hernandez is proud of his extra digits and calls them a blessing, saying they set him apart and enable him to make a living by scrambling up palm trees to cut coconuts and posing for photographs in this eastern Cuban city popular with tourists. One traveler paid $10 for a picture with him, Hernandez said, a bonanza in a country with an average salary of just $20 a month. “It’s thanks to my 24 digits that I’m able to make a living, because I have no fixed job,” Hernandez said. Known as polydactyly, Hernandez’s condition is relatively common, but it’s rare for the extra digits to be so perfect. Anyone who glanced quickly at his hands would be hard-pressed to notice anything different unless they paused and started counting. Hernandez said that as a boy he was visited by a prominent Cuban orthopedist ...

How much of lies will earn Omisore a governorship ticket?

Image
In June last year when Iyiola Omisore threatened to stop the convoy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola to search him for God knows what, not a few Nigerians home and abroad were alarmed at what they believed indicated Omisore’s resolve to ignite mayhem in Osun if that is what it requires to become the Governor. But even in the face of overwhelming evidence of his threatening outbursts, Omisore went to town denying ever making such statement when it dawned on him that his threat contained elements of crime against the state. While failing to clean up the mess of an open threat against a serving Governor, the desperation for office has led to more faux paus from the cantankerous politician whose career has been dogged by nothing but notoriety. Of course, not a few discerning minds know that all the hoopla about Islamising Osun, concocted security reports; secession plot, cancer, and other forms of manipulated diatribes are aimed at only one thing: Discredit the governor and h...
