JTF In Maiduguri Engaged In Systematic Killings And Arson Against Civilians

Members of the Joint Task Force in Maiduguri have been  implicated in a series of violent attacks on civilian targets as a means of avenging the death of troops assigned to fight the Boko Haram sect. Investigations by SaharaReporters revealed that JTF members have killed more than 45 civilians and destroyed more than 100 houses. These wanton acts of mass murder and destruction were carried out by JTF operatives last Monday and Thursday after bomb explosions killed a JTF commander and two members of the outfit. “It is an unforgivable crime when armed officers take to killing innocent civilians in a fit of vengeful rage,” a Nigerian reporter for Human Rights Watch (HRW) told Saharareporters from Abuja. He called on the Nigerian government to identify, arrest and prosecute the rogue officers who carried out these illegal killings and widespread destruction in Maiduguri. “That’s how the government can demonstrate that it did not give approval for this grave violation of the rights ...

Will China’s Scientists and Technologists Ever Be Truly Innovative?

Just this week, a House of Representatives committee issued a report warning the United States against doing business with  two major Chinese tech firms, ZTE and Huawei . The companies were closely tied to the Chinese government, the report said, and could be stealing information from the U.S. government and American businesses. Against that backdrop, today Future Tense—a partnership of  Slate , the New America Foundation, and Arizona State University—held an event called “ Arms Race vs. Relay Race: What Does Innovation Hold for China? ” In opening remarks, Steve LeVine, Washington correspondent for  Quartz  magazine and a Bernard L. Schwartz fellow, established the questions for the day: Can China ever become an “innovation juggernaut,” just as it is a world leader in manufacturing? Does “innovation” have to mean breakthroughs, or is incremental innovation—small tweaks on Western-made technology to make it cheaper and sometimes better—enough? And should th...

The UpNEPA Generation And The Memories Of Biafra – By Chinedu Ekeke

children, women and men. There is uproar in the land; the echoes of our discord, long lost to the façade of unity we have patched up with for forty years, are reverberating again. Biafra is back, this time not as the country that is said to have been, but as the nemesis that is, our nemesis, a reminder that this union was faulty from foundation, and that, worse than the faulty foundation was the absence of true leadership from those on whose shoulders the future of Nigeria was thrust. We call them founding fathers. I’ll come back to them. In my village, those whose feeling of accomplishment is founded in vain comparison with others, rather than themselves, like to brag that our clan has produced more educated people than the other clans. They count the graduates from family to family and house to house, and ignorantly pass on to us the message of supremacy over others; you know, that body language that conveys feeling of superiority; “I’m better than you!” Beyo...

The shooting by was the third fatal incident since September. At least 15 other Mexican civilians have been shot dead by American patrols since 2010.
